Job Description
POSITION: PROFESSIONAL WRITING TUTOR (HALF TIME)
This position entails tutoring students one-on-one through in-person and online formats, conducting writing workshops in and out of class, collaborating with faculty on assignments and students’ needs, serving as a writing associate linked to classes to provide course-specific writing tutoring, and other related duties as assigned. Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours preferred. An ability to assist the department in development of web-based resources is essential. This is a half-time position, which does not accrue sufficient hours for benefits.
RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):
- Tutor writing to students in all college programs.
- Develop workshops in collaboration with needs that faculty and CAE staff identify. Publicize the workshops. Develop the instructional materials. Evaluate the effectiveness of workshops.
- Serve as a writing associate for courses, which entails collaborating with faculty on assignments, attending classes, reading course texts, and working with students on writing assignments one-on-one or in small groups.
- Tutor online following departmental protocols and assisting with streamlining the department’s online tutorial format and online resources.
- Assume other responsibilities as relates to expertise in writing, for instance, evaluate portfolios and teach a writing-intensive course on as needed basis.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree preferred
- Higher education work experience of teaching or tutoring a variety of learners or demonstrated potential to transfer other educational/teaching skills to this environment
- Strong knowledge of research writing documentation styles, the APA style preferred
- Excellent writing, organizational, computer, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Proven record of helping students achieve academic success
- Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner
- Demonstrated proficiency working in an online environment and willingness to contribute to the development of online resources
- Willingness to learn ESL tutoring strategies
- Physical ability to perform essential functions of the position, as noted below, with or without reasonable accommodation.
